PFC Arthur A. Hersh served in the 77th Infantry Division, 305th Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, A Company & HQ Company in the Pacific in WWII. He began his military service as a combat infantryman, eventually taking over communications at the front line. Of the hundreds of letters he wrote home, only 44 survived.
